My infant didn't get a baggage allowance, but I could check three items for free: a pram, car seat, and portacot — each up to 32 kg. You can also bring a small bag of food and nappies on board in addition to your own carry-on. The pram can be gate-checked but on full flights enforcement varies — I learned to keep essentials in my own bag just in case.
Qantas rarely weighs carry-on at the gate — I flew with about 11 kg when the limit is 7 kg and nobody checked. What matters more is that your bags look normal and you're not struggling. If they do notice, they'll usually gate-check it for free rather than charge you. Jetstar is much stricter, but on Qantas proper you're generally fine with a backpack and a small roller.
