Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take a 55 x 40 x 23 cm cabin bag on Air New Zealand without paying extra?

Air New Zealand allows one cabin bag with maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 23 cm and up to 7 kg for every economy passenger.
One small personal item such as a handbag or slim laptop sleeve is also permitted in addition to the main cabin bag.
All dimensions include wheels handles and external pockets as stated in the official policy.

How many 23 kg checked bags come with my Air New Zealand ticket?

Most standard international economy fares include one free checked bag weighing up to 23 kg per passenger.
Flights to and from North America include two free checked bags at 23 kg each for economy travellers.
Every checked bag must stay within 158 cm or 62 inches of total linear dimensions.
Additional bags beyond the free allowance can be added online for a fee before departure.

What happens if my carry on is slightly over the 7 kg limit?

Air New Zealand may check both bag size and weight at check in security or the boarding gate depending on the airport.
Bags that clearly exceed the allowance may be required to go into the hold and additional charges can apply.
Enforcement can vary by route staff and how full the flight is on the day of travel.
Weighing bags at home before leaving for the airport is the best way to avoid unexpected fees or last minute repacking.

How much carry on baggage does Premium Economy include?

Premium Economy and Business Premier passengers can bring two carry on bags with a combined total weight of up to 14 kg.
No single bag in the premium allowance may weigh more than 10 kg even if the combined total stays under 14 kg.
Both cabin bags must still fit within the standard 55 x 40 x 23 cm size limit for use in the overhead lockers.
One small personal item is also included just like in economy class.

Do all domestic Air New Zealand fares include checked baggage?

Seat Only fares on domestic New Zealand flights do not include any checked baggage and bags must be purchased separately.
The Works and other standard domestic fares include one checked bag of up to 23 kg per passenger.
Domestic baggage fees are usually cheaper when added online during booking compared with paying at the airport on the day.
Extra bags and additional weight can be added up until online check in closes for the flight.
