Recent Traveller Feedback
Booked ZIPAIR from Tokyo Narita to Bangkok and was surprised to find out that the base fare does not include any checked baggage at all even though it is a six hour international flight, so I had to pay about eight thousand Japanese yen extra for one 30 kilogram checked bag which I was not really expecting from a long haul carrier.

Flew ZIPAIR from Seoul to Tokyo and really liked that you get two pieces of carry on baggage for free, one larger cabin bag measuring 55 x 40 x 25 centimetres for the overhead locker plus one smaller personal item of 45 x 35 x 25 centimetres that goes under the seat, as long as the total combined weight of both pieces stays under 7 kilograms.
Treated myself to the ZIP Full Flat business class seat on the flight from Tokyo to Singapore for the extra comfort and flat bed, but I had to pay an extra fifteen thousand yen for two checked bags because even the business class fare on ZIPAIR does not include any free checked baggage at all which is very different from traditional full service airlines.

Went through security at Narita International Airport before my ZIPAIR flight to Los Angeles and the standard 100 millilitre liquid rule applied just like everywhere else, so I kept all my toiletries in a clear plastic bag and everything passed through the security checkpoint completely smoothly with no delays at all.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the carry on size and weight limit for ZIPAIR?
Every passenger on ZIPAIR is allowed two pieces of carry on baggage free of charge, and the larger main cabin bag must be no bigger than 55 x 40 x 25 centimetres including wheels and handles so it fits properly in the overhead locker above the seats.
The second smaller personal item has a maximum size of 45 x 35 x 25 centimetres and it has to fit completely under the seat in front of you, and common examples include a backpack, laptop bag or small handbag.
The combined total weight of both carry on pieces together must not exceed 7 kilograms, and this is different from many other airlines where each individual bag has its own separate weight limit instead of a shared combined limit.
Does ZIPAIR include any free checked baggage with the ticket?
No, ZIPAIR does not include any free checked baggage with any fare type, not even on long haul international flights or in the ZIP Full Flat business class cabin, and every passenger has to pay extra if they want to check a suitcase into the cargo hold.
This unbundled pricing model is very typical for low cost airlines and it is one of the main ways ZIPAIR keeps its base ticket prices much lower than traditional full service carriers like its parent company Japan Airlines.
You can purchase up to five checked bags per passenger either online through the ZIPAIR website before your flight or at the airport counter on the day of travel, and buying in advance online is almost always significantly cheaper than paying at the airport.
How heavy can each checked bag be on ZIPAIR?
Each checked bag on ZIPAIR can weigh up to a maximum of 30 kilograms, which is noticeably heavier than the standard 23 kilogram limit used by most other international airlines, so you can pack quite a lot more inside each individual bag without having to pay extra overweight fees.
The maximum number of checked bags you can bring per passenger is five pieces, and you pay for each bag individually based on how many you need for your particular trip.
If you think your bag might go over the 30 kilogram limit it is always better to split your belongings across two separate bags instead, because bags that weigh more than 30 kilograms cannot be accepted at the check in counter at all.
Does the ZIP Full Flat business class include free checked baggage?
No, surprisingly the ZIP Full Flat business class fare on ZIPAIR does not include any free checked baggage either, and business class passengers have to pay for their checked bags exactly the same way as economy class passengers do.
The main benefits of paying extra for the ZIP Full Flat seat are the fully flat bed for sleeping, extra legroom, priority boarding and additional cabin service, but the actual baggage allowance stays identical to the standard economy class fare.
A lot of travellers find this confusing because most other airlines include extra baggage in business class, so it is always worth double checking your booking before you arrive at the airport to avoid unexpected extra charges.
Is it cheaper to buy checked baggage online or at the airport with ZIPAIR?
It is always much cheaper to purchase your checked baggage online through the ZIPAIR website before your flight, and airport prices are significantly higher because they include an additional administration fee on top of the standard baggage charge.
You can add checked bags to an existing booking up until a few hours before your flight departs, and the price usually depends on the length of your route with shorter Asian flights being cheaper than longer flights to North America or Europe.
Because ZIPAIR is a low cost airline the base ticket price is kept intentionally very low and all extras like baggage, seat selection and meals are sold separately, so planning ahead and adding exactly what you need online in advance will always give you the best overall value.
